Cornhole Rules and Layout
The National Tailgating League Cornhole court is a rectangular area 8 ft wide and a minimum of 42 ft long. The court consists of 2 boards, 4 designated pitcher’s boxes and foul lines. The boards are placed 27 feet apart (between front edges of Cornhole boards).Rules of the game:
- Doubles – 2 players per team, 2 teams (4 players). Teammates stand on the same side as one another.
- Each team gets 4 bags (of the same color) making a total of 8 bags needed. 4 bags are thrown per round.
- Player must throw from behind the front of the board to avoid a foot fault. A foot fault results in the bag being removed from the playing surface (if applicable). The same rule applies if player throws out of turn.
- Each team alternates shots beginning with the team that scored last. To determine the first throw of the game, a player from each team throws one bag. The player closest to the hole throws first.
Scoring:
- Bags must land and stay on the board (without touching the ground) or go completely through the hole to score.
- A bag on the board = 1 point
- A bag in the hole = 3 points
- Points cancel each other out.
For example:
- Team A has 3 bags on the board (3 points) and 1 bag in the hole (3 points) totaling 6 points
- Team B has 3 bags on the board (3 points and 1 bag off the board (0 points)
- Team A wins the round with 3 points (6 points minus 3 points)
- Team A has 3 bags on the board (3 points) and 1 bag in the hole (3 points) totaling 6 points
- The first team to 21 points wins the game.
- Knocking an opponents bag off the board is legal
- A bag that bounces from the ground/floor onto the board surface is disqualified and removed before the next throw.
